Have you ever heard of the Land of 100 Lakes? A magical place in the Miedzychodz district in the buffer zone of the Notecka Forest. Probably most of you don’t know this place, and that’s because we prefer to spend our vacations in the mountains, the Masuria region or by the sea. Is it a mistake? Of course, not everyone enjoys different leisure activities. I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t write about this wonderful, though little-known place where I grew up, live and operate.
Today’s story begins with the county town of Miedzychod . It is assumed that the name of the city took its origin from “walking between fords”, Miedzybrod – Miedzychód. Since the Middle Ages, the German name of the town “Birnbaum” was used in parallel with the Polish one. It means pear tree, which is reflected in the city’s coat of arms. The township was granted city rights before 1378.
We should start our adventure in Międzychód from the train station, unfortunately no longer in operation. At one time lines 363 Rokietnica – Międzychód and 368 Szamotuły – Międzychód ran here. The beginning of the railroad dates back to 1887 unfortunately, passenger traffic was closed in 1995, and in 1999 it was also closed to freight traffic. Miedzychód has quite a transportation problem because we can’t get there by train, only the occasional bus and private buses. But back to the tour, we can see the beautiful train station, which now houses apartments and warehouses, and until not long ago there was also a disco there.
Walking towards the center, it is worth stopping at the monument to the insurgents, and then peeking at the school and seeing the beautiful mural that refers to the 100th anniversary of the Wielkopolska Uprising.
Miedzychód is a city of post-German tenements that are getting another life. While in Międzychód, take a peek at Lipowiec, it is an informal city district with a beautiful avenue of trees where you can sit and relax. In Lipovec, two places are worth a look. The first is the current city hall, built in the late 19th century. and expanded in 1911. Interestingly, there were 3 town halls in Międzychód that burned down. They were located on the market square in Miedzychodz – now the PKO bank operates there. Also worth a look is the Lipovec Church, which was built in 1840_to replace a previously burned church.
Walking from the church, he suggests entering Oskar Tietz Park, sitting on a bench with a fisherman and taking a moment to relax while enjoying the view of Kitchen Lake, which is in the middle of the city. The shoreline of the lake is about 3 km and we can easily go around it. Walking along the boardwalk, we have a bike path, a playground and park, outdoor gyms and beaches with slips. There is a legend associated with Kitchen Lake that there is a castle in the middle, which sank during one of the battles and storms.
Walking from the lakeside, we head to the center where we pass through the so-called “Gaski” from German , “die Gasse” are such small, narrow streets that were intended for evacuation during the numerous fires in the city.
Market Street, now a pedestrian zone, is characterized by compact buildings of 18th and 19th century gable-end townhouses. Miedzychód is one of the most beautiful towns in the Land of 100 Lakes.
Reaching the market square, we can see a fountain with a fisherman under a pear tree is a place where locals and tourists relax.
In the vicinity of the market you can see numerous townhouses, and one catches your special attention White Eagle Hotel, in 1928 Pola Negri(Polish theater and film actress, international silent movie star) spent one night in it to promote her new film entitled: , “Hotel Imperial” Today the building is haunted because the owner of the building does nothing with it, and it falls into disrepair waiting for a better life.
In the market you can meet a donkey, whose story is also interesting. Next to the monument was once a dairy. Stories familiar among locals tell of two donkeys that took turns every day to travel the route from Muchocin on their own, bringing milk to the dairy. The donkeys were friendly and always allowed themselves to be stroked by the residents. They became mascots of the city, but this was due to various events, because when they went at the beginning of the parade they always stopped at the dairy. In 2012, a monument was erected to commemorate the friendly donkeys.
We stroll through the promenade on Kilinskiego Street and see another church whose history dates back to 1591, then was burned down and rebuilt again. One legend says that the church was robbed, and when the thieves were caught, it was decided to reflect their faces in clay and place them in the church tower to remind everyone that crime never pays.
While in Międzychód you must see the city’s landmark, the “Laufpompe“. It is a deep artesian well that has been continuously operating since 1912. Pumps water characterized by a positive chemical composition for health. For those who are in Międzychód for the first time, we recommend taking the water with you in a bottle, then wait 3 days before drinking. Then the water is the best, and the tea is excellent.
In Międzychód we can see the harbor and the Warta River, which are part of the Great Loop of Wielkopolska. The lagging of the Notecka Forest numerous forests, and in them delicious mushrooms.
As you will be in these areas it is worth seeing the numerous lakes, of which there are more than 100. The most popular resort in the Miedzychód municipality is OW Mierzyn, with its beautiful beach and promenade and piers. During the summer season, not only locals relax here, but you can also meet tourists who often come from distant parts of Poland.
Near Miedzychod we can find other charming lakes, although they do not have such a beautifully landscaped beach as the one in OW Mierzyn. These lakes are Głęboczek, Radgoskie Lake, Szeńinskie Lake, Młyńskie Lake in the village of Kapli and Gorzyńskie Lake in the village of Gorzyń.
